Voices from NUFF 2007

Niklas Nannebro, Sweden
Festival guest; filmmaker NUFF

"t's a great festival with lots of wonderful people. A big get-together for film interested people from all over the world. After hearing people talk, about them and seeing the movies I feel really sad that i weren't able to participate

Continue the great work! I hope we'll meet again. :)"

Espen Karlsen, Norway
Group: Linda Hattendorf

"A lot of great people, a god atmosphere.

Love you all! Thanks for a great week."

"I had a wonderful experience coming together I a formal yet informal environment with passionate young people from around the world. It was well paced - busy yet relaxing at the same time.

The workshops were the key to the experience. Without the workshops, there wouldn't have been the personal need or attachment to see all of the films. I cannot imagine NUFF without the workshops!

Where ever we had a problem, it was solved."

Busayo Iruemiobe, Nigeria
Filmmaker NUFFGlobal
Group: Paolo & Lisa

"The NUFF is a beautiful concept. Making it global this year even enriches it more. Gathering youth filmmakers from all over the world under one roof and exhibiting their works only furthers their common interest and fuses there mutual understanding and love for film and filmmaking.

I loved the workshop. I enjoyed actually making films with persons from different backgrounds. Our workshop leader was so inspiring that if he asked us to jump from a a cliff… well, we would really consider. Maybe even do it.

Em…Em… Yeah, i guess the technical assistance was above average. We had more than enough equipments around us. We had about 4 cameras and post-production facilities and were giving a rough guide on how to use them.

The universality. The spirit of an united front. I liked the concept of making movies addressing the controversial issue of climate change.

The food is quite constant which is good but i feel there should be more varieties. The food selection should reflect our mullet ethnicity. But on the whole i enjoyed myself with more than enough helpings.

I will love to be here next year. Because NUFF is the place to be. There's so much togetherness and coming from a continent like Africa were there's so much diversivity, it's really refreshing. Thank you for inviting me. Words cannot really express my gratitude."

Tunde Aboderin, Nigeria
Filmmaker NUFFGlobal
Group: Svein Andersen

"This is a festival that empowers youth in developing their skills in the media sector. The workshop is very fruitful cause different people from different countries and cultural background have to work together to archive the same objective. It is fantastic.

The technical assistance was very encouraging because you get to use equipment you've never worked with.

The kind of interaction developed by participants of the festival as a result of a well structured meetings and introductions further strengthens the good outcome of the workshop and seminar."

Paolo Davanzo, USA
Workshop teacher

Incredible! I have travelled the world extensively making films and attending festivals and have never experienced such a loving, poignant and profound time as this one. Your dedication to media activism and global media literacy is astounding. May NUFF spreads it wings and fly!

A truly wonderfully and unique experience. In five short days, we made a film but more importantly journeyed into the hearts, souls and minds of 10 truly diverse individuals. The world is a brighter place because of it.

The best part of this festival was meeting such wonderfully talented and powerful souls. I feel like my surrogate family has grown to include 50 new individuals.

Wonderful! The trip up the mountain was a fantastic idea. I enjoyed the free time mixed with activities.

Thank you all for a truly magical week. I feel the experience has open my mind up to so many different cultures and ideals. You have created such a powerful and effective program that has nurtured and mentored a new generation of media activits. May our paths cross sooner than later and may we continue to change the world one frame at a time."

Chris Roberts, Nigeria
Festival guest - NUFF Global coordinator for West Africa

The festival has kept evolving from a purely Nordic enclosure to a more increased diverse geographical spread. The film workshop demystifies the complexity of filmmaking as an art and encourages young filmmakers to see filmmaking as a strong medium for social interaction.

Like I said before the workshops show that filmmaking requires commitment to translate an idea into an audiovisual expression and fosters the team spirit.

My main impression of the festival it is nice and wonderful. It is different experience make us live the life in a different way… I can't talk a lot about the festival more because how much I say I will never find the exactly word that describe it…

The workshop is nice especial I was in so nice group from all over the world and all of us have done nice work.

The technical assistance is so good and helps us to do our work… in professional way…However in last minute it doesn't work so well.

Everything I can belited in this matter.

Nila Wallin, Norway
Group: Susanne Stranddorf

I liked it. I learned things on the set and get inspired by all different people. I'm optimistic and feel that film is full of all possibilities/vastness from all the different people and movies I've seen. The festival was organized well and interesting program.

The workshops were fun and they were also a challenge with so many people. I learned a lot and we came together like a nice group. Susanne was a good and enthusiastic leader!

Thanks for this year! Hope so much to be back next year!

Anton Skott, Sweden
Group: Matthias Glasner

Impressive! Way exceeded my expectations.

The main problem was how uneven the people were, both in experience and dedication. It can be a good thing but in my group it was a problem.

Great! Any problems we had were solved quickly.

Such a nice atmosphere. I made so many friends so fast.

Thank you for the amazing week!

Megan Cunningham, South Africa

The festival was a very great opportunity to voice our views of our different situations. I enjoyed the freedom of the workshops. I firmly believe that this film festival can create opportunities for other people (The audiences) around the globe. This festival can open up opportunities for the youth of our generation to stand up, share our views and change the world!

The workshops were very interesting. The leaders were very well informed and our leader taught us to the best of his ability.

The different parts of the world that were represented. I enjoyed the diversity.

It was a very good festival. I would just suggest that there should be a certificate of attendance for our CV's.

Thanx 4 a Great Experience!

Great!

Hard work but I like that.

The concept, the people, the films, the filmmaking…

Great dinners, bad lunch, hehe.

Great that it was so close, but internet connection would be good to have. But good.

Luciano Ibarra, Germany
Festival guest; Filmmaker NUFF Global

All in all - great. Very good location (Tromsø) and facilities. Excellent idea to support filmmaking around a political issue by young filmmakers from around the world.

Tvibit has better equipment than most social centres around the world. I enjoyed the feedback given by Daniel Alegi during my production.

The city of Tromsø, the people, the networking possibilities. The fact it was embedded in a city that has quite a lot to offer (Polar institute, cultural activities…)

More networking opportunities - both in political and filmmaking terms. There contact to producers, media projects, environmental and political organisations, foundations etc. This would enhanced the outcome of future projects - international cooperations. Especially since flying in so many people produces an awful amount of greenhouse gas emissions and it can only justified if the result of the meeting of all the people has a much larger positive impact on preventing climate change. This relation felt a bit out of balance for me.

Breakfast buffet was excellent! Lunch was monotones … always the same. Having access to water tea and fruits was great. Dinner was ok. Shrimps, salmon were great.

Very Good. Had excellent sleep and a shower every day. Intimate space. Great.

Very good. The flow of information was a bit chaotic sometimes - brief updates at lunch or dinner would have been great.

Good but not so result oriented. It was a bit consumption oriented. Licked Kim Holmen's presentation - wished there had been more debate and opportunities for people to present what they do about climate change in their countries or here in Tromsø.

Had hoped for more focus on climate change. I.e. involve Polar Institute. Some more young people from Natur og Ungdom Tromsø (met them at their stall in the street - know hardly anything about NUFF Global). Had hoped for more cross over outcomes between people involved in media and people involved in climate change. Having such incredible infrastructure and resources .... we could have attained a much better result in terms of future activities and networking. I think it would have been better to have more forum discussion with the filmmakers. More ESCITY and green screen type things i.e.

Sebastian Cordes, Denmark
Festival guest; filmmaker NUFF

I think that there are a lot of good films and promising filmmakers. But i think also that there have been quite few people at the screenings and that's a shame.

The film screenings is a lovely opportunity for watching other peoples films and talk to the creators afterwards.

There was only 15 minute break between every screening and it was in the middle of the meals. Plan it better by maybe starting several hours later. There is nothing to do until the screenings anyway.

Great set up but there’s a couple of things to be taken care of - the screening times for example. And then your selection of the films still is a mystery for me! From Station Next they sent a movie: "The Tooth Fairy" which has won a "Grand Prix" prize at MCA and shot beautifully but was neglected at NUFF.

Lindsay Robles, Canada
Festival guest; filmmaker NUFFGlobal

This was my first participation in a festival so I learned a lot about producing a festival, about the craft of filmmaking and the business of filmmaking.

I liked the social aspect of the festival. The fact that the festival did not end after the screenings but rather continued around the clock with meals, discussions, workshops and other exchanges (between formal and informal)

Getting more people to the screenings and getting the young people to show some more respect to the films. Maybe by engaging them more with questions and answers. They would get less bored.

I was impressed and grateful to have been provided with 3 meals a day and was impressed with the co-operative organisation. I also loved the smoked salmon and chocolate Nutela.

I was impressed and grateful again by the service of the Tvibit members. They took the time to drive us around and pick us up. Also the fact that Faisal came to the hotel at 2am to settle our room problem when checking in.

We had a great week, Thanks to everyone.

Good, but it's complicated that all the NUFF competition movies are screening the same day. It's hard to remember all of the movies. I really liked when the directors were telling about their movies.

I liked that you were free to make your own choices about the film you making. You can do what ever you want to do and the workshop leader is there if you need help.

Saturday, there was something called "Blue Screen". It wasn't about blue-screen but about the directors and their movies. They told about their movie and everybody could ask if they want to. I really liked that!

Not screening the movies from NUFF at the same day. It's complicated to remember all of them.

Boring and not interesting. It's complicated that you only get one menu. Because if you don't like the food you have to buy something on your own - and buying in Tromsø is expensive! Maybe more different food at dinner in spite of one only.

A lot of people are here because of the movies - not the "climate change- NUFF Global" program. It's interesting but in this week there have been too much of the climate change and that's not why I’m here. I was not impressed about the movies from the NUFF-competition. There was a lot of the movies didn't understand why was picked for the competition. I think you shouldn't show all the NUFF 2007 movies at the same day. And I think you should make some "talk-show" look a like where the directors talk about their movies.

Lisa Marr, USA
Workshop teacher

Overall, the festival was extremely well-run on all levels - workshops, screenings, meals and activities were all inclusive, relaxed and inspiring without being to rigid or overly structured. Festival organizers did a great job of bring a divers group of individuals together to create and celebrate socially-conscious filmmaking in its many forms.

We had a truly wonderful experience as workshop leaders, due in large part to our group dynamic which was very open, respectful and creative. The time frame adequate and the structure worked well for us.

Technical assistance was great! Joachim, Andrea and Viktor were all extremely helpful and quick to deal with any equipment and software issues we had… Luckily we didn't experience any major tech problems… all the gear was well, maintained and worked great.

The atmosphere of the festival creates an opportunity for exchange of ideas and creativity by young filmmakers from around the world. The connections made here will last lifetimes.

Some concepts and components of the festival could have been better explained, ie - that the workshop films were not part of a competition; that students were expected to participate in a group evaluation at 11am on Sunday.

The food was abundant and tasty. Very nice to have coffee and water available all day. Perhaps a few more greens on the menu next year.    The hotel was clean, comfortable and conveniently located. The fact that Tvibit has wireless internet was great since our side of the hotel did not offer this amenity.

Everyone has been helpful, generous, courteous and friendly…

We felt welcome here from the moment we arrived.

The trip up to the mountain was magical! The film trivia contest was a fun evening and nice that you offer some entertainment for the younger participants.

A terrific and inspiring week! Thanks so much for inviting us to be a part of it and congratulations on a job well done. We look forward to seeing the festival evolve and flourish! One question: Why wasn't given Hermann given space in the program guide to talk about the festival? As the voice and vision behind NUFF it would be great to have him represented in print.

I thought it was wonderful. A brilliant and well executed idea that was so worthwhile. I am so jealous that Norway can boast that it is doing its part to make a difference. If only other countries would follow suit and put their money where the mouth is! I would love to continue to be involved in future workshops and discussions.

I felt that the workshops were wonderful and felt disappointed that our group, group one, did not get the benefit of an interested and committed leader (see other comments). Even despite this, as a group we were able to function and have a wonderful experience ourselves.

There could have been more lighting options.

The chance to network with other film makers. I definitely intend to draw on these contacts in the future.

It could have been better organized - with individuals made more aware of obligations etc. before we started. Overall pretty good though.

I felt that, whilst the food was great, there were not enough vegetarian and Halal-options.

Very worthwhile and interesting. I loved being involved.

I strongly feel that Svein Andersen was more of a hindrance than a help over the film shoot. He delayed shooting with useless brainstorming excurses, refused to allow crew roles early, and then demanded on Day 5 that we work roles out in 5 minutes, which led to conflict. He was unable to consider or concede that there were ideas perhaps better than his own, and refused to listen. He felt he needed to 'squash' me rather than teach me. He had difficulty considering cultural differences. I feel that, he may be a good director, but he is not a good teacher and that NUFF should take this into consideration at the next workshop. He was also rarely there - always at business meetings and of little help on the shoot.

The festival was good because I met people from different countries and shared ideas. And i learnt from different people and it was well organized.

The workshop was good because everybody was given a chance to do what you want and show also what i know.

It was a good kind of festival because we worked in the group of different culture.

 The food was nice.

The lodging was very good.

Everything was just good.

Was a great experience. We had chance to know each other more.

The festival was good and all the officials were good. I really liked the hospitality. I really love NUFF and Tvibit.

James Njuguna, Kenya

The film festival was well organized and co-operated nice team-work. The best part is how all the countries came together this means that me showed be united despite our colour or country background. I believe next year all the countries will participate in the countries.

The workshop was well co-ordinated with good workshop leaders, all the workshop groups worked as a team and respected the deadline, with the less days and sleepless nights I would say that all the groups produced wonderful films. The workshop was of good help to me personally because I learned a lot of things from the rest of the members.

The technical assistance was fantastic because we got everything we needed for the shooting and props, editing and money to bring anything for the production.

The way it is organized and also everything was close and it made work easier.

Inviting more people from different countries especially all the African countries. I believe if we all come together we will know situations to our problems and we will change the world through film.

Nice food. We had bread all the time but that does not matter as long as we all like the food.

The lodging was clean and good breakfast and also cooperative staff.

The service was good.

Well coordinated

Just a word of congratulation to all the people that made this festival to be successful and also inviting and recognising the African countries and the Youth filmmakers. I believe next year more African will participate in the festival. Let’s all keep in touch and change the world.

It is a chance to share film globally, for culture sharing, experience sharing. Learn many creative points from Nordic angle which are seldom used in Asian films. Well organized, people are friendly. Proper for time schedule.

An impressive of team work, team members from different countries. Achievement - 5 days for a film project. Self-confident, workshop leader always encouraged students to try and give enough guide.

I like the screening (NUFF films). It’s lucky to watch so many good films from Nordic countries. Ceremony: screening the final project done by each workshop.

Screening sector: time arrangement and more "Green Screen" sector for discussion.

Dinner is good. However the lunch is soso, but it’s acceptable. The food is all environmental friendly.

Very Good. All staffs and volunteers in Tvibit are helpful and friendly. And all arrangements are well done. Thanks for all of your work and efforts.

I would like to attend, they can provide more chance talking with each other and sharing.

I really like the screening sector. However. It's so many films screened in one day. Although i would like to discuss with some of them. It's a little bit hard to remember them. Better to arrange them screened in several days. It's good for "Green SCREEN" sector. I can hear and talk with filmmakers about the feeling when he/she did it. And it’s an interactive way to understand the film.

The festival is a good idea and in order to develop the talents of young people. I acquired new skills and varied experience.

This is an avangarde movement! And i think that it is a new way of thinking the cinema. It's a perfect opportunity to youth to make cinema and think about their reality. Sharing is the word.

I think that you have a great structure and at the same time we fell free to create!

Just great!

The fact that we're sharing different point of view about what is the cinema for.

Just keep on doing NUFF Global!!!!!

I think it's still being created, I think you should change the program in each festival; I think that changing is your big issue.

 Stian Thilert, Norway
Group:  Svein Andersen

Impressive, well organized and a very welcoming atmosphere. Very nice to be able to work that way; Having a workshop leader supervising and giving tip, having all the equipment at hand and helpful people all wanting to help as much as they can. The multicultural side of it also gave loads of inspiration, showing that borders are made of men, we are all humans with dreams and if we want we can cooperate and create something positive in short time. The people at Tvibit are incredible, always doing the best to help out.

That’s a tough one, but I guess the side of it having people from all around the world together for one common purpose. The festival brought young people from the whole world together showing that we do care and we are able to make a change, together.

I guess if I have to put my finger on something it has to be that under certain circumstances there wasn’t time enough to be apart of all the sides of the festival, having the workshop taking up to much time.

All good, for me food is food, so I guess I’m not the right person to ask.

Couldn’t have been better; Comfortable, close and clean.

One love and best wishes for the future, hope to be allowed to come back next year.
